Walla Walla Swim Club Strength & Conditioning
In partnership with Rootwing Fitness
Rootwing Fitness is excited to partner with the Walla Walla Swim Club to offer dedicated strength and conditioning sessions designed specifically for competitive swimmers. Led by Coach Kevin Ewing—former collegiate swimmer and former assistant coach at Whitman College—these sessions focus on building strength, mobility, and injury resilience outside the pool.
Workouts will take place at Rootwing Fitness in College Place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30–7:30 AM, and will run in 6-week sessions that align with the boy’s and girl’s high school swim seasons:
Fall 1: 8/18–9/26
Fall 2: 9/29–11/7
Winter 1: 11/17–11/21 & 12/1–1/2 (Thanksgiving week off)
Winter 2: 1/5–2/13
Cost: $225 per 6-week session, or $400 for a combined 12-week block.
Capacity: Limited to 6 swimmers per group to ensure quality coaching.
These workouts will emphasize foundational strength and conditioning through compound movements like the squat and deadlift. Unilateral strength and core stability will also be a main focus. Sessions will help to equip swimmers with versatile, transferable movement skills that can be performed in any gym setting.
Additional times and space may be available in the future. These sessions are optional and not included in club dues. Any workout cancelled due to inclement weather will be reimbursed at a rate of $18.75 per workout.
About Kevin
Kevin grew up in Deerfield, Illinois, where he developed his passion for swimming through years of competition at both the club and high school levels. As a student-athlete at Deerfield High School, Kevin competed at the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) state championships, specializing in the IM and backstroke events.
Kevin continued his swimming career at Kalamazoo College, where he swam for four years and served as team captain his senior year. During his time there, he was a four-time All-MIAA conference honoree and earned conference championships in multiple events, including the 200 backstroke, 200 IM, and 400 IM. He was twice named a Scholar All-American Honorable Mention by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America, recognizing both his athletic performance and academic achievement.
After graduating in 2016, Kevin moved to Walla Walla and joined the Whitman College swim coaching staff. In his six seasons as an assistant coach for the men’s and women’s teams, Whitman swimmers achieved five team conference titles, set numerous school records, and earned multiple NCAA All-American honors. Kevin was also instrumental in the development of three-time NCAA DIII national champion and Olympic trial qualifier Tanner Filion. In addition to his work on deck, Kevin also led the strength & conditioning program and helped athletes develop skills in the weight room that complemented their work in the pool.
Kevin holds a Master’s degree in Exercise Science and Kinesiology, with a focus on Strength and Conditioning. He is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and Certified Personal Trainer and has additional credentials through USA Weightlifting and CrossFit.
Kevin and Rootwing Fitness are excited to partner with the Walla Walla Swim Club to bring swimming-specific strength & conditioning expertise to the valley. We can’t wait to work with you!
